Why redundancies happen
The main reasons for redundancy are:
- The organisation is in trouble, and will either close down or needs to reduce costs very quickly
- The organisation has merged with another company, and there are now duplicated skills
- The organisation relocates
- The needs of the organisation or its market are changing, so your skills are no longer required
For your redundancy to be legitimate, the work that you do must disappear, ie the company must not recruit or move somebody to do the job you were doing (although it can still recruit to fill other jobs).
